Geiersthal

Guti-Place - travel by bus and train free of chargen

32 villages and hamlets make up the resort area of Geiersthal. Crowned by the towering castle ruins of Altnußberg, an archaeological research site and lookout point.

Geiersthal lies in a quiet hollow. Close to nearly 100 kilometres of well marked paths, there are indoor and outdoor tennis courts, summer curling sheets, Kneipp therapy facilities and skittle alleys. Guided walks are an excellent opportunity to get to know the surrounding forest.

Folklore evenings at the Altnußberg castle ruins are particularly popular with locals and guests.

Distant Views from the Castle Keep
In the 12th century, Altnußberg was one of the oldest and largest castle complexes in East Bavaria. In 1469 it was destroyed and for more than 500 years covered over and hidden from view.

In May 1983, archaeological excavations were started at the site and the ruin was gradually revealed and carefully rebuilt. A 20 metre high tower now offers a wonderful 360° view. Many of the archaeological finds are displayed in the museum at the site. There are guided tours from May until October. (Contact: Mrs. Bollmann, Tel. 09923/2575)
